Awards: William Hodgen Building of the Year & Commendation, 2017 Australian Institute of Architects Darling Downs and West Moreton Regional Awards
Reimagined from the ashes of a fire-ravaged 1920s hotel, the Royal on 99 in Roma blends heritage and modernity to redefine the outback pub experience. The design reinterprets traditional regional architecture, creating a light-filled, family-oriented space that respects its community roots.
The redevelopment emphasised strong street connections, removing barriers to enhance visibility and invite casual engagement. A transparent façade highlights the two-story bistro, prominently positioned at the intersection. Drawing from surrounding architecture, the design integrates function spaces, lounges, sports bars, gaming facilities, and terrace bars, all centered around the bistro’s open volume with extended views to the streetscape.
This thoughtful approach ensures the Royal on 99 caters to all ages and demographics, instilling a sense of pride and belonging within the community while offering a modern yet familiar experience.
