Originally developed in collaboration with QUT as a space-planning exercise to test a new staff accommodation model, this project explored a balanced approach to academic workplace design. The initial concept integrated individual offices with flexible open-plan workspaces and a series of small meeting and quiet rooms, supporting both focused work and informal collaboration within a university environment.
As the project evolved, the brief expanded to accommodate a new faculty office, prompting a reconfiguration of the layout to meet the needs of a larger and more diverse academic team. The final design incorporates a dedicated seminar room, a suite of “Zoom” rooms to support online teaching and presentations, and an enlarged collaborative zone connected to the kitchen and seminar space. This flexible hub functions as a breakout area, staff lounge and informal event space, reinforcing connection and adaptability within the workplace.
The interior design draws inspiration from QUT’s Campus to Country framework, using a warm, natural palette of earthy tones and textured finishes. This approach provides a welcoming alternative to the conventional white open-plan office, creating a calm, human-centred academic workplace that supports wellbeing, productivity and contemporary ways of working within a tertiary education setting.
